About
The Institute for Humane Studies and Intelligent Sciences (IHSIS) was created in 2004 as a non-profit organization, devoted to advance knowledge, promote graduate education and help society discover new ways to overcome some of its most pressing problems and future challenges.
IHSIS congregates two main areas of study – Humanities and Intelligent Sciences – making it a unique institution, by integrating de facto human and technological dimensions of science.
As society develops into increased levels of complexity, the implications of questions posed by technology, advanced computation, cognitive sciences, life sciences and bio-engineering inpinge upon areas of knowledge traditionally related with human studies, such as philosophy, theology, psychology, the arts and legal and political thought.
IHSIS recognizes that some of the main questions challenging humanity in the coming decades will be transversal to those fields of knowledge, which for a long time have trailed separate paths. The Institute reflects upon the way in which scientific and technological developments may affect the human condition, and tries to conceive ways how to respond to radical changes.
IHSIS aims to foster the advancement of knowledge and technologies that may contribute directly to the improvement of society, the quality of human life and economic fairness, and indirectly to the political and social dimensions of democracy and sustainable development, while delving deeper into the acknowledgement and understanding of the differences and similarities characterizing the cultures and traditions of our communities.
By developing a crucial awareness of the ethical, legal, philosophical and theological implications of scientific and technological research, IHSIS aims to bridge the gap between the Humanities and Advanced Sciences, towards an encompassing view of human development, and public engagement and informed discussion among stakeholders in government, industry, academia, and the non-profit sector.
In its core, IHSIS is structured as an international platform in which scientists from different home institutions across the world meet around specific projects, themes and research topics. It is IHSIS’ aim to maintain a high degree of flexibility and mobility, keeping a lightweight structure that allows for different configurations of protocols, contributions, and intellectual/scientific exchange.
Due to its cross-disciplinary nature, IHSIS congregates people from different areas of knowledge, such as philosophy, history, law, literature, art, cultural studies, medicine, biology, engineering, theology, architecture, urban planning, economy, advanced computation and others.
Realizing that some of the most relevant issues confronting society today cross the boundaries between Sciences and the Humanities, IHSIS intends to promote an enriching dialogue between the major areas of knowledge that form our Human patrimony.
